One award, so why is this industry news instead of a personal headline?
Accredo Packaging's sustainability chief Trei Johnson took the 2026 Packaging News Sustainability & Impact Awards Sustainability Leader of the Year. Read only the headline and it's easy to file this away as a personal accolade; from what I've seen across the US and European flexible packaging supply chain, this is a signal of organizational change. Accredo's award write-up is blunt about it: the sustainability function has moved past "write reports, answer customer questionnaires" and become a data-driven, rhythm-driven, globally strategic unit that shapes product development
That gap with where most Taiwanese printers and brands sit right now is wide. What I see is sustainability still bolted onto sales or admin as a side task, write the ESG report, close the file, nobody actually owns PCR (post-consumer recycled resin) intake ratios, mono-material structure development progress, or supplier carbon inventory results. When brand-side buyers start using "do you have a sustainability director" as a screening filter, what they're really asking about is the whole governance stack behind that title

Why does a flexible packaging plant especially need this role?
Flexible packaging has been under the heaviest squeeze on sustainability in recent years. The film has to be lightweight, barrier-protected, recyclable, and actually processable in existing recycling systems, and those four demands constantly pull against each other. Accredo's coverage names three workstreams worth paying attention to:
・PCR adoption: post-consumer recycled resin share, source traceability, supply stability
・Mono-material PE structure development: moving away from multi-layer laminates toward recyclable single-resin systems
・Supplier carbon inventory: pulling real scope 3 (supply chain and end-use) numbers so you can answer brand-side carbon footprint asks
None of these three lines can be pushed by the marketing department alone, procurement, R&D, QA, and customer service all have to move together. That's why Accredo pulled the sustainability director up to a unit that reports directly to the CEO. Without that rank, you can't force cross-functional cooperation
Most Taiwanese flexible packaging and laminate bag plants still run on a "sales guy also handles environmental stuff" model, when the customer asks for details, the answer is "let me check." That pace won't pass on export jobs over the next three years
Which three documents will brand customers start asking you for?
The real signal behind Accredo's award is that brand-side sustainability audit criteria are shifting gears. Over the past few months I've seen the same three documents showing up repeatedly in client RFPs:
・PCR ratio table: per product, per SKU, PCR percentage, recycled-content certification (not just one overall average)
・Carbon footprint table: at minimum cradle-to-gate, scope 1 and scope 2 mandatory, scope 3 down to tier-1 suppliers
・Recyclability certification: How2Recycle, APR (Association of Plastic Recyclers) recognition, or test reports against Europe's CEFLEX design guidelines
None of these three documents can be filled out with a press-release-grade statement. The most urgent homework for Taiwanese SMEs and brands right now is to actually produce these three numbers for your main product lines, rough estimates with rationale beat a blank page every time. Blank equals out of the game on these new audit sheets

How should a mid-sized plant actually set up this role?
Mid-size suppliers and above should consider pulling sustainability out from under sales and setting it up as a standalone unit reporting to the GM or CEO. The critical part is giving the role three tools: the authority to convene cross-functional meetings, the right to recommend a hold on product development, and ownership of customer sustainability audit responses. If any one of those three is missing, the role is just a new business card
Plants that can't yet justify a full-time sustainability director can start from two angles:
・Give your existing QA or R&D lead a sustainability hat on top, with a fixed share of their time dedicated to answering external audits
・Bring in outside advisors or partner with a team like the MINDS Knowledge Academy consulting team to build out the three-document inventory process first, then decide whether a formal role makes sense
Either way, the point is the same: sustainability can't stop at "someone writes the ESG report." Someone has to own the numbers, own the customer replies, and have a voice in product line decisions. What Accredo's award really demonstrates is the seniority of that role, not the name of the winner
Think "we're printers, not packagers" means you're off the hook?
A lot of folding carton, label, and commercial print shops figure this topic doesn't touch them. That might hold for another year or two in Taiwan's domestic market, but the moment your client is a brand and your client's client is on European or American retail shelves, you're in this supply chain. Graphic Packaging's personnel moves around the same period point in the same direction: brand-side buyers are changing the grading rubric, not the regulations, they're changing who marks the tests
Better than waiting for a customer to ask "do you have a sustainability director" is asking yourself: for our main product lines, can we put PCR ratio, carbon footprint, and recyclability certification on the table within three days? If yes, there's room to negotiate. If no, you're competing on price, period
The margin in this industry has never been about capacity. It's about the moment a customer audit clears and the other side looks at you a second longer. That second of attention now hangs on how complete your sustainability paperwork is, not on the title on a card

Key takeaways
A sustainability director award is a governance upgrade signal, not a personnel story
Brand customers want three documents: PCR ratio, carbon footprint, recyclability certification
A flexible packaging plant's sustainability work has to move procurement, R&D, QA, and customer service together
The sustainability role needs cross-functional convening authority, product hold recommendation rights, and customer reply ownership
Smaller plants can start with external advisory partnerships: build the inventory process first, then formalize the role
Worth thinking about next
Looking from Accredo's award back at Taiwan, what I see is a governance gap widening on a clock. The most realistic move for Taiwanese SMEs and brands right now is to inventory the three documents, PCR ratio, carbon footprint, recyclability certification, across main product lines, with a six-month deadline. Plants already serving export-brand customers should ask those customers directly for the latest supplier sustainability audit forms (RFP or SAQ) and use the client's questions as your checklist, it's more accurate than guessing on your own. The next signal to track: whether Accredo's suppliers get pulled into the same three-document requirement. If the timing lands between Q4 this year and Q2 next year, Taiwan's flexible packaging and laminate bag plants need to have their first round of data ready before the formal letter arrives. If you want to bring this process into your own company's sustainability governance or product lines, feel free to reach out to MINDS Printing — start with material specs and carbon footprint inventory on the print-job side

FAQ
- How does a Sustainability Director differ from a typical EHS manager?
- An EHS manager handles internal regulatory compliance and plant safety records. A Sustainability Director owns externally verifiable sustainability data, PCR ratio, carbon footprint, supply chain audits, with authority that extends to the customer side and into product development
- Why do flexible packaging plants especially need a Sustainability Director?
- Flexible structures have to be lightweight, barrier-protected, recyclable, and actually processable in existing recycling streams, those four goals pull against each other. Without someone with cross-functional decision-making authority, the work stalls between procurement, R&D, and QA
- What sustainability documents are brand customers most often asking print suppliers for right now?
- Based on the RFPs I've seen recently, at least three: a PCR ratio table (percentage and source certification by product), a carbon footprint table (minimum cradle-to-gate, scope 1 and 2 mandatory), and recyclability certification (How2Recycle, APR, or CEFLEX-aligned test reports)
- Taiwanese mid-sized printers don't have the scale, where do you start?
- Spend six months getting the three documents out for your main product lines, reasonable estimates with supporting logic are fine. At the same time, designate someone already on the team as the sustainability point of contact with a fixed share of working hours dedicated to external audit replies. Get through this stretch first, then decide whether a formal role is justified
- Does Accredo's award mean anything for Taiwan's domestic-market plants?
- Yes. The moment your client's end market is European or American retail, or your client is a brand, you're inside the supply chain audit scope. Domestic brands with export plans need to get their documents ready before the customer starts asking
