Why Print Can Still Go Wrong After Monitor Calibration

Even if monitor calibration is done properly, there is still one more gate to pass: what you see on screen must be the simulated result after the print ICC Profile is applied, not the design software's native display

That is the core of soft proofing. In Illustrator and Photoshop, soft proofing overlays the print shop's ICC Profile onto your monitor display so you can preview roughly how the design will look on that printer and that paper. Several settings have to be right:

・Choose the ICC supplied by the print shop as the color profile, not the default sRGB or AdobeRGB

A Practical Remote Color Workflow for Sending Print Files

Here is the full operating sequence when you put all of the above together:

・Step one: perform hardware calibration. Calibrate your monitor every 2 to 4 weeks, especially if it has been used for more than three years or moved to a different workspace. Set the target brightness to 120 cd/m² and the color temperature to D65
