Reconstructing a Foil Stamping Rejection
A designer sent final cover artwork out for foil stamping. The layers were clearly separated: foil-stamped text and spot gloss texture were each on their own layers, and the PDF output looked clean. After receiving the file, production replied: "The black artwork is wrong. We cannot separate it for foil stamping film."
The designer was understandably confused, because the black text was plainly visible in the AI file
So what went wrong? Those black text objects had an overprint attribute, while the foil stamping plate required clean K100 knockout black artwork. In print logic, the two settings are complete opposites. Both may look like black text on screen, but the machine reads them as entirely different signals
This is one of the easiest hidden traps for designers to miss: how a PDF appears visually and how inks actually stack on the substrate can be two different things

What Is the Difference Between Overprint and Knockout?
Let us start with the definitions
Overprint: the upper ink prints on top of the lower color plate, so the two ink layers physically mix and the color underneath is not removed. Small black text is often set to overprint because it helps prevent white gaps caused by registration shifts; even if the plates are slightly misaligned, the black text edges will not reveal the background
Knockout: before the upper color area is printed, the corresponding area underneath is removed, leaving space for the upper ink. Foil stamping, spot UV, and embossing templates all require this kind of clean, independent plate
Both settings have valid uses. The problem is using them in the wrong context

Why Are Finishing Plates Especially Prone to This Problem?
Foil stamping, spot UV, and embossing share one common trait: each requires an independently made template or plate based on the black artwork you submit. The object should appear only on the K plate as pure K100, with nothing on the C, M, or Y plates
Finishing equipment does not understand layers. It only reads black and white on the plate: black areas are stamped, varnished, or embossed; white areas are skipped
Once an object is set to overprint, after the PDF is separated, that position on the K plate is no longer a solid black area. It becomes a mixed area where colors underneath show through. When the platemaker separates the file, the K plate edge is unclear, or the whole area may appear too light, making it unusable for engraving a foil stamping die or producing a spot UV film
What makes this worse is that designers usually did not turn on overprint intentionally. It is often enabled automatically by the software when certain styles are applied. You did not choose it, but it sits there quietly waiting to cause trouble

What Are the Correct Steps for Setting K100 Black Artwork?
There are several things to confirm when setting up finishing objects:
・Set the color value to C0 M0 Y0 K100. Do not put any values on the other plates, and do not use four-color black, also known as rich black
・In Illustrator, select the object, then go to Object > Attributes and make sure Overprint Fill and Overprint Stroke are both unchecked
・In InDesign, use Output > Output Preview > Separations Preview. Turn off the C, M, and Y plates and look only at the K plate. The finishing object must be solid black. Any graying or background showing through means the overprint setting has not been fully cleared
・After exporting the PDF, open Acrobat and go to Tools > Print Production > Output Preview. Enable Simulate Overprinting and check once more for any color showing through or disappearing objects
After these four steps, most black artwork problems for finishing can usually be caught
Why can foil stamping black artwork not use four-color black? The reason is straightforward: formulas such as C40 M30 Y30 K100 leave values on the C, M, and Y plates after separation. When the platemaker separates the file, content from other plates gets pulled in as well, so the K plate is no longer clean. A foil stamping die only reads the K plate. With four-color black, the object edges become blurry, registration becomes inaccurate, and rejection is almost inevitable
Different Print Shops Have Different Overprint Defaults. How Should You Check Before Printing?
I have explained this to clients many times: Acrobat and RIP software do not handle PDF overprint settings consistently
Some vendors' RIP systems ignore the overprint attributes in the file and process everything as knockout. Some preserve your settings exactly. Some even force K100 objects to overprint because that is how they usually handle black text. As a result, the same PDF can output differently on different shops' machines
There is only one solution: set the file correctly at the source, instead of relying on the vendor's RIP to guess your intent
For black body text, if the type is small and fine, overprint can be reasonable, but you must make sure the background is dark enough; otherwise, the color showing through will shift the appearance. For large headline type or black text on a dark background, choose K100 knockout or four-color black knockout depending on the design requirement
For finishing black artwork, regardless of how the vendor's side is configured, your file should always be K100 + knockout. After exporting the PDF, run Output Preview yourself to confirm it. This is the last checkpoint you can control
