So what's the actual difference between artwork and prepress?
Artwork is the design file you've finished. Prepress is all the up-front work to get that file into a printable state. If your camera originals are big enough, you're fine; anything pulled off the web won't cut it
・Color mode: RGB has to become CMYK. Screens emit red, green, and blue light (RGB); printing layers cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink (CMYK). The two color spaces don't overlap the same way. Bright, almost neon colors on your screen are almost never reproducible in print. There are no exceptions to this. The colors going dull after conversion is normal
・Bleed: 3 mm on every side minimum. Bleed is the extra bit of color that extends past your design edge, so that even with a hair of cutting error, no white sliver shows. Taiwan's print industry generally treats 3 mm as the floor; 5 mm is common in Europe and the US. Skipping bleed before submission is the classic rookie mistake

What should you just leave to the printer?

Outlining fonts yourself is how you end up with missing characters or wrong substitutions, which just creates a new set of problems
Another common trap: people think once bleed is in, they're good to go, and forget about the "safe margin." Keep any important text or graphics at least 3 mm inside the trim line, or a tiny cutting error will slice off a corner. This concept is called the "safe zone," different from bleed, and it gets overlooked just as often
Advanced color management (ICC profile mapping, PSO certification, FOGRA, the German print research association's process standardization certification) is the printer's call on their own production line. Unless the job has very tight color demands (say, a brand color guide), the client side doesn't need to know this layer

Why do some files still get bounced back by the printer?
Even when you've cleared the three checks, the printer may still kick it back at the prepress stage. Four usual suspects:
・Fonts not embedded or not outlined, and the press throws a missing-font error when it boots up
・Transparency and layers not flattened, so the RIP (the press's raster image processor) can't crack the file open
・Black set as "pure black" instead of "rich black," which leaves big black areas looking patchy and uneven
・Bleed going the wrong direction or missing entirely, messing with any back-print finishing

If you need small runs of business cards, stickers, or flyers, online ordering is the easiest. If it's a brand annual catalog, packaging boxes, or anything with special finishing, you need a full-service commercial printer
