Many designers hit Save as PDF at the final stage and ship the file straight to the printer. Once layers carry Drop Shadow or Multiply blending, the output shows up with thin white lines running along the edges
The trade calls this banding or seam lines, and the root cause is that older PDF formats can't read transparency
When you save into a PDF version that doesn't support transparency, Illustrator is forced to run Flattening
It chops your transparent vector shapes and the underlying artwork into a mosaic of rasterized chunks. If the RIP miscalculates by even a little, the seams show through
