How Far Should Text Stay from Glue Flaps and Fold Lines?
Do not place critical text next to glue flaps or fold lines. This is one rule you should enforce firmly when proofreading packaging dielines
For standard cartons, keep a safe distance around glue flaps, fold lines, and die-cut lines. The actual distance depends on the box structure, paper thickness, finishing method, and printer specifications. A common starting point is at least 2 to 3 mm, then adjusted according to the finished product
Text near glue flaps carries 2 risks:
・It may be covered by glue, the gluing area, or paper overlap, especially side-panel instructions and small brand copy

An EAN-13 barcode has 13 digits. The barcode itself, quiet zones on the left and right, and print contrast all affect scanning, so do not treat it like an ordinary graphic and squeeze it into a corner
I usually evaluate barcode placement using 4 criteria:
・It must not cross a fold line. Once the barcode is deformed, the scanner may fail to read it
・It must not be placed on a glue flap. Paper overlap, glue, and crease marks can all interfere with the black-and-white bars
・It must not sit against a box corner. The corner curvature after assembly can turn the barcode into an arc
・It must not be placed where glossy lamination creates the strongest reflection, especially on small boxes, curved labels, and gold or silver card stock
Information such as ingredient lists, nutrition labels, warnings, origin, and storage instructions is best placed in large areas on the back or side panels

I would ask the client to imagine this scenario directly: a consumer picks up the box in a store and is willing to spend only 3 seconds looking for ingredients, capacity, or storage instructions. If they cannot find it within 3 seconds, the layout is not easy to read
How Can You Catch Errors with a Blank Mockup or Digital Proof Before Printing?
A blank mockup uses unprinted stock or similar stock that is cut, creased, and folded into a physical box first, so the team can confirm structure, size, opening and closing behavior, and reading direction
A low-cost digital proof is useful for checking text placement, general color direction, and visible panels after assembly, especially for new box structures, small trial runs, or first-time collaborations
Before sending files to print, I run a 5-step check:
・Open the dieline layer separately and confirm that die-cut lines, fold lines, bleed lines, and glue-flap lines have not been mixed into the final print separations
