Front-Face Recognition

Can the front of the packaging be recognized within 3 seconds as a consumer walks past? The product name should be legible at a glance, and the core visual symbols must have sufficient visual impact. The identity logic across product lines should be consistent so that consumers can quickly find the specific item they want

Readability

Font size, color contrast, and line spacing must be re-verified after being scaled down to the actual packaging dimensions. Viewing a design file zoomed-in on a computer is one thing; printing it out and scaling it back down to physical size is another. Light-colored text on light backgrounds or fine fonts on white backgrounds are the most common configurations that fail in reality

Side Panel Information

Dietary supplements and food products have legally mandated labels. Ingredient lists, manufacturer details, and expiration dates are often placed on the side panels. Because side panels are narrow, designers often shrink the font size to fit everything, which can violate legal minimum height requirements. For instance, Taiwan food labeling regulations dictate that the font height for main ingredients must not be less than 2mm. Which Stage is AI Shelf Simulation Suitable For?

Before receiving a physical blank dummy or short-run test prints, AI shelf simulation serves as an effective intermediate tool if the client needs to deliver retail channel presentations early or if the design direction is still being refined

The approach involves placing the design file's key visuals, product names, product line colorways, and promotional messages into a shelf scene that closely mimics a real retail environment to simulate what consumers see. This process helps filter out several common design misjudgments before physical proofing:

・The front-face recognition disappears after being scaled down

・Insufficient differentiation when product lines are lined up side-by-side

・The key visual gets drowned out by competitors' color systems

The perspective on the exact same packaging placed at the golden shelf level (approx. 130 cm) is entirely different from when it is placed on the bottom shelf (approx. 40 cm). Consumers look down at bottom-shelf items from above. If the center of gravity of your design is at the lower half of the package, it will be half-blocked by the shelf edge at the bottom. Before finalizing the design, confirm which shelf level the product will be primarily displayed on. Avoid making a 'one-size-fits-all' version and hoping it will look great everywhere

Interference from Neighboring Products is Stronger Than You Think

When designers work on a file, they only see the package itself. However, what consumers see in front of the shelf is this package surrounded by whatever is to its left and right. If the neighbor on the left is a brand with bold red letters and the neighbor on the right is a blue-and-white striped brand, whether your packaging remains visible depends on color contrast and the strength of your visual identity. This is something you can only evaluate clearly by placing all three side-by-side in a physical environment
