How Should Dielines Be Marked So Technicians Do Not Misread Them?

There is no universal color law for dieline marking, but the industry does have common conventions. The safest approach is to name each line type with a spot color, then confirm the swatches and stroke weights with the vendor you are working with

・Cut line: Often marked in red or a 100% Magenta spot color; the line indicates that the die should cut through the paper

・Crease line: Often marked in blue or a Cyan spot color; the line indicates a crease, not a cut through the paper

Many errors happen not because designers lack visual judgment, but because visual artwork habits are carried into production artwork. Dieline files are judged by whether the production line can cut according to them, not by whether the screen layout looks tidy

Paper grain is not something design software will automatically solve for you. Sheet cutting, imposition direction, and the box's unfolded layout all affect the final folding feel. If your box has four main crease lines, at minimum, confirm with the vendor whether the primary load-bearing creases should follow the grain direction

Rounded corners are another old issue. Sharp corners look clean on screen, but after die cutting they are more prone to fuzzy edges, tearing, or lifting. For most custom-shaped cards and paper box outer edges, I recommend keeping the corner radius at no less than 1.5mm unless the paper stock, die, and finishing vendor have all confirmed it can be produced

Narrow paper bridges require even more caution, such as areas near hang-tag holes, card tips, box-lid insertion tabs, and thin necks along shaped edges. A difference of only 1mm in the visual artwork can become the exact point that breaks easily in hand

Complex custom shapes are not impossible, but every additional sharp corner, inward notch, narrow bridge, or sequence of small curves increases die cost, stripping difficulty, and yield risk. For these projects, I would rather make one blank sample first than push the risk straight into mass production

How Should PDF and AI Source Files Be Delivered to the Vendor?

Do not deliver only a PDF for dieline artwork, and do not deliver only an AI source file either. A PDF is suitable for buyers, designers, and clients to review appearance, while the AI source file is suitable for prepress, imposition, and die-cutting teams to inspect line types

・PDF version: Used to confirm visuals, dieline position, text direction, bleed, and dimensions, and is suitable for sign-off

・AI source file: Preserves layers, spot color, vector paths, and text handling status, making it easier for the vendor to correct or separate layers

・Bleed setting: Printed bleed must still extend beyond the dieline. Most commercial printing uses 3mm, while special box structures should follow the vendor's specifications

・File naming: Avoid names such as final, final2, and newfinal in the same project. Use dates and version numbers instead, such as v03

・Sign-off process: Before mass production, ask the vendor to return a dieline PDF and confirm that the Cut, Crease, and Perf lines have not shifted

The projects most likely to show white edges are usually the ones where the designer stops the artwork exactly at the dieline. The dieline is the cutting target, not the print boundary. If there is no bleed outside the dieline, even a tiny paper tolerance can expose the base color
