These are the items I check one by one every time I receive a laser engraving project. Miss any one of them, and the file is much more likely to be rejected

Line Weight and Typeface

・The minimum line weight should not be below:

・0.3mm. Anything below this carries a high risk of broken lines on most materials; for coated metal, it is even better to allow at least

・0.5mm or more

・The minimum recommended font size starts at 8pt. Thin-stroke typefaces, such as ultra-light sans serif or handwritten styles, should be enlarged by one level or converted to outlines for another round of checking

・If a design with very thin strokes must be used, mark "detail to be confirmed here" clearly on the sample order. Do not wait until mass production to discover the issue

Choosing Between Recessed and Raised Engraving

・Recessed engraving, where the design is carved into the material: the character outline becomes the cut edge, so the thinner the type, the more likely it is to char

・Raised engraving, where the surrounding area is burned away and the characters stand proud: this can work slightly better for fine text than recessed engraving, but the burned background area is larger and the overall burnt smell is stronger

・The contrast difference between these two methods is substantial. It cannot be judged on screen. It must be confirmed through sampling, and you should not rely on impressions from a previous project

Artwork Layers and Output Format

・Cut lines and engraving areas must be separated into two layers. Do not mix them in the same path

・AI or PDF vector formats should be the main output formats. If using a raster image, the resolution should be at least 600dpi; anything below this will create jagged edges

・For engraved patterns with gradient or grayscale effects, confirm the grayscale parameter range supported by the supplier separately

How Much Do Charred Edges and Odor Vary Across Materials?

・Coated metal, such as anodized aluminum or painted metal: laser engraving removes the surface coating to reveal the base material, creating sharp finished contrast. The base material color directly affects the final visual result, so the coating model and base-material color pairing must be confirmed before ordering

・Paper: This is the hardest to control. Edge browning is almost impossible to eliminate completely; it can only be reduced by lowering power to shrink the burn-mark area. Thick cardstock above 300g is easier to control than thin paper, but it also carries a higher risk of burning through

What Must Be Checked on a Sample Before It Counts as Real Approval?

Many clients receive a sample, check only whether "the engraving is there," and sign off. Then mass production comes back with charred character edges or uneven depth between batches, and it becomes difficult to trace responsibility. Visual Details

・Whether the finest lines are clear, with no breaks or blurred edges

Touch and Material Condition

・Whether the engraved surface has the expected tactile relief. Some clients want an obvious texture, while others want it flat

・Whether leather or wood develops cracks or warping after engraving, which is a sign that the power is too high

Odor and Treatment

・Leather and wood will carry some burnt smell after laser engraving. Confirm whether the finished product needs resting time for odor dissipation or special post-processing

・For food-related packaging or gifts, odor standards must be clearly defined at the sampling stage

Expected Batch Consistency

・A single sample can only confirm design feasibility. It cannot represent mass-production consistency

・It is recommended to ask the supplier for a "small-batch sample" of 5 to 10 pieces, then use that batch to verify batch stability. That is what real pre-production confirmation looks like

If your project involves engraving on both sides, or if multiple specifications are being produced at the same time, each specification must be sampled separately. Do not use a sample from specification A to represent specification B

What Acceptance Checks Are Still Needed After Mass Production?

The sample has passed and mass production has started, so you can relax? Not quite. During laser engraving mass production, the laser tube power can decline slightly under continuous use. Sometimes the pieces produced at the beginning and the end differ by a full level in depth or darkness

A few control actions you can take:

・Ask the supplier to retain one sample from both the beginning and the end of mass production so you can compare consistency

・For larger batches, meaning more than 500 pieces, require mid-production sampling instead of waiting until everything is finished

・Confirm whether the supplier has a fixed energy calibration process. This is the most direct indicator of process stability
